I’ve Moved

I have nothing against WordPress.com, but I prefer to have total control over every aspect of my blog, and that means hosting it myself.

How To Make A Crappy Art Journal Of Mistakes And Mayhem

1.  Start at 4:30am because you couldn’t sleep.

2.  Use very expensive paper (Fabriano Artistico Hot Press, $6/sheet)

3.  Measure.  Once.

4.  Cut.

5.  Cry.

6.  Cut the wonky pieces in half and try to salvage them for an odd-sized journal.

7.  Fold smaller wonky pieces in half.

8.  Re-fold wonky pieces, trying to align the edges a bit better.  Don’t try to0 hard, the pieces are all different sizes and crooked anyway.

9.  Bind pages with needle and thread/cord.  Use a hole punch that is too small, then force the needle and cord through the hole.  Take your time.  You will need it.

10. Wince at all the wonky edges on your bound blank “journal.”

11. Use Watercolors to paint the backgrounds.  For the cover, choose two contrasting colors.  While still wet, blend the edges where the color meets, creating a nice muddy-brown shade.

12. Continue to paint the pages with watercolors.  Use water liberally.  Note the liberal use of water on this page:

13. You will know you’ve used enough water when the color seeps under the seams.  This next page should have used a maxi pad with wings.

14. Use somewhat matching (but not really) pens to decorate the front of the journal.  Bonus credit for unintentional phallic symbols.

15. Now that you’ve created a thoroughly crappy journal, make the best use of it you can.  Try things you’re scared to try.  Use color combinations and techniques you aren’t sure will work.  Laugh at yourself.

Nobody is ever going to see how crappy your journal is except you.  Nobody.

Girls With Pearls #4 – “Elegance”

Curtain

Act II
the curtain rises
(most days)

all eyes on me
as I search
faces
for those I recognize
beloved
familiar or
complete strangers
(a few more today
than yesterday)

I have no
understudy

if I stumble
forget a line
or two
I can usually
recover
before anyone
notices

Sometimes they do
notice
and then the
look
in their eyes the
look
of pity
compassion
and (sometimes)
fear
the sad smiles
the patronizing nods

when my
performance
is over when the
curtain
falls it’s
just a little
less sheer than
yesterday
the veil heavier
the fog denser
and I realize the
faces the
memories my
lines
will
be just a little
more blurred
tomorrow.

Mon Petit Liberté

Suzi Blu taught me how to make Petit Dolls. Suzi is the reason I have been creating again after a 20-year self-imposed art exile. Suzi is inspirational, irreverent, incredible, imperfect, and incandescent. Each time she comes up with a new class, I find myself counting my pennies. Her classes are fun and full of valuable advice, techniques and suggestions. Suzi’s prices are reasonable, especially when one considers that the videos and materials are yours to download and keep forever, and you will receive personal feedback on everything you submit. You won’t find Suzi short of encouragement, energy or enthusiasm. Visit her at A Lovely Dream and get in on the fun!
